ISLAND

ISLAND

She sat at the table drinking her tea. She’d been waiting for an hour in the hopes her friend would come.

It had been so long since they’d spoken, she wanted more than anything to hear her voice and see her smile.

Instinctively she reached out and smoothed her old, faded summer dress that was immaculate and unwrinkled.

Swarms of people moved past and around her, not seeing her while they went about their day.

She took another sip of tea, feeling alone and sad. Had she been abandoned? Was there no chance of her friend coming?

She heard footsteps behind her, then a gentle hand on her shoulder.

She reached out and patted the hand, never looking up, never needing to. Her friend was here, she was no longer alone and no longer ignored.
