Second Story Syndrome

Howdy All.

I hope everyone is well.  We’re a month into 2018 and things are crazy!

This is just going to be a quick update about me…exciting I know, and then I’ll follow up in a couple weeks with more interesting fare.

I received my novella back from the editor and it turns out it’s just a complete mess.  I’ll admit I was less than focused last year, but that’s really no excuse.  I haven’t put out a novel in almost 3 years and I was truly hoping to get something out this month.

Evidently it’s not too uncommon to have your second novel suck balls so I’m not completely devastated. However, I am just devastated enough to hunker down and really focus so I can truly deliver something that will in fact not suck.

I take solace in knowing many writers suffer from “Second Story Syndrome” I just figured because of my years of experience I wouldn’t.

No one wants to hear their second attempt is a steaming pile of terribles, but it is what it is and she’s right…it is.  I do love the premise and potential so I will eventually go back and fix it, but my editor has almost 20 years experience so I’m taking her advice and leaving it aside for now.

I will now, be concentrating on my next two novels, Blood Rebellious and Night Mage that I will be aiming to release later this year and early next.

This will be followed by the sequel to The Geek entitled STILLWATER. And then, after the fixing I’ll release my novella.

Or I won’t.  We’ll see.

I will however be doing less podcasts and YouTube because I simply must concentrate on writing. If I’m not focused it’s all gonna suck and it is what I love to do more than anything.

Not suck, I don’t love that, I mean writing.

I am going to be taking this week to go over the chapters I’ve written so far for each novel and then choose the one I feel confident I’ll be able to flow with over the next month/month and half and finish it in time for a late spring/early summer release.

So while it’s unfortunate about the podcast and the youtube channel I will be uploading, but very sporadically.  And I’ll let you all know when new episodes are up.

However we currently do have a new podcast up on Podbean and ITunes all about time travel and the John Titor story.  I’ve also uploaded the video version of the podcast on YouTube, also about John Titor.

All links are below.

I hope everyone is getting their 2018 off to a good start and I’ll see you all very soon.

Best,

Jonathan

Hey look at me not giving a fuck.

Amazon http://amzn.to/1MwzPG6 Buy my novel already!  Jeez!

If you’re in Los Angeles head on over to Skylight Books in Los Feliz and pick up a copy there. They’re a great independent bookstore and it’s a nice way to show support for them.  We need all the independent stores we can get.

Okay let’s take a breath…

Hey All,

So I think we can all agree it’s been a hell of a week.  I’m not going to get into what the President said or who’s right or who’s wrong here.

However, I do think a general metric in how you live your day to day life can be summed up as followed:

If the former head of the KKK thanks you for something you’ve said, you’ve said something horrible.  Unless you happen to be the current head of the KKK, in which case…well done ya ignorant, racist bastard.

Angie and I are actually going to be preempting our usual podcast this next Friday and will be airing an “emergency episode” of The Perilous Podcast this Wednesday in which we cover the current shit tsunami and dig deep into the conspiracy behind the alt-right, the far left and what really happened in Charlottesville and why you should actually be way more scared than you already are.

However, in the meantime how’s about a nice way to start your weekend.

Over on The Perilous Podcast site I sit down with Bryant Dillon, co-founder of Fanbase press and fellow writer.  We talk about how comic book super heroes are becoming the new pantheon of Gods and it’s far more light hearted and fun than what’s going on now.

On The Perilous Podcast YouTube channel we have the video broadcast of our Black Dahlia podcast from last week, plus other past episodes in video form.  So you may want to give that a watch.

As for me I’m getting ready to do a bit of traveling.  I’ll be in Denver (I think) in late September for a couple days, followed by a trip to Phoenix in late October and then a jaunt down to Palm Springs in early November, so yay me and my hotel points program.

I’m pretty excited about my novella coming out in January and my new novel set for release in spring of 2018 as well as some other stuff in the works I just can’t talk about right now…but it’s all good.

Look everyone, let’s try to stay calm, maybe even distract ourselves a bit (ain’t nothin’ wrong with that) and enjoy our weekend.

I have a lovely weekend planned as I recoup from my latest Jiu Jitsu injury, including a Tchaikovsky concert this evening, a bit of work tomorrow recording some podcasts followed by a night in and then I’m hoping some video games Sunday followed by a movie before going back to training on Monday.

Plus I scored some great plums at Costco this week so that’s good.

Anyhoo, why not follow the links below for all of your distraction needs.  Pick up a copy of my pulp novel The Geek. or maybe just unplug from everything and go for a nice long hike.

But seriously, buy my book first, I don’t see why you wouldn’t.  Links for that are below.  However if you’re in the Los Angeles area or live in Los Angeles and like supporting independent bookstores why not head into Los Feliz and go to Skylight Books to pick up The Geek in paperback.

Skylight is awesome.  They support and promote local and indie authors and it’s a great place to pick up a book and browse.  I love their counterculture stuff and they have a great selection of quirky fiction.

Plus it’s right down the street from Fred 62.  A great diner with awesome milkshakes, so you can stop by there before or after your trip.

No I am not the owner of Fred 62…but I eat there frequently.

Here’s a link to skylight with their address and hours:

And one for Fred 62, because it’s tasty:

Weekend Update

Hey Everybody,

No story today just a quick update.

First let me say how much I appreciate everyone’s feedback about the new podcast.  My cohost Angie and I really are grateful that you all like it and we have some great episodes coming up.  Currently we’re debating JFK and next Friday we’ll be talking about Ghosts and why Angie believes and I don’t.

Though to be more accurate I do, I just don’t believe they’re ghosts.  Yeah, pretty intriguing right?  No?!  Whatever, just tune in…link to podbean is below and of course it’s also on ITunes.

My experimental novella The Eastern Road has gone off to the editor and will be out the third week of August.  It’s the first book under my new company The Chapel Perilous and I do hope you’ll download a copy from Amazon.  I’ll be doing a limited print run for you paperback lovers and will have details on where you can grab one of those bad boys shortly.

There’s gonna be more micro stories and flash fiction next week as well as updates on other projects and my release schedule for the coming year.

Two years in between books is a very long time but life has a certain way of complicating things.  However, after the novella, there will be a release of my sci-fi novel Blood Rebellious in early 2018. followed by an early summer release of my fantasy novel Night Mage.

Then in very early 2019 there will be the long awaited follow up to my pulp novel The Geek, currently titled Stillwater.

After that I have a long overdue nervous breakdown scheduled and most likely a nice vacation.

If you haven’t picked up a copy of The Geek follow the handy dandy links to goodreads and amazon.  Give the reviews and ratings a read.  If you think some hyper-violence and a pile of dead hookers might tickle your fancy download a copy or order a paperback from Amazon.

If you live in Los Angeles or coming to Los Angeles, then head on over to Skylight books and pick up a paperback copy.  Skylight Books is a great independent bookstore catering to indie writers and small press publishers.

So if you like paperback over ebook and love supporting indie writers, there’s no better place to shop.

Plus it’s down the  street from Fred 62, a most excellent diner so you might as well grab lunch, breakfast or dinner there and a copy of The Geek from Skylight.

And if anyone is curious or wants to swing on by the Marriott in Woodland Hills this weekend I’ll be doing a couple of panels and teaching a writing class on how to create strong mythology in your stories.

The event is called Whedon-con and it’s a really great time.  All the money raised is during the even is donated to charity.  Which is why I volunteer my time every year for this event.  It’s a great way to give back to the community I love while doing something really nice for people who need it.

And it is a lot of fun

What’s that?  You want links for my useless social media?  Why sure pal, here ya go.

Movin’ Groovin’ and Youtubin’

Well things happen and don’t happen in this town. Such is the way of the working writer.

Life, if we stop to relax and think about it, is a pretty good thing. Sure there are ups and there are downs but overall this little blue marble aint a bad place to hang out, all things considered.

My recently optioned screenplay seems to be going nowhere relatively quickly. The second option is coming up and I’ll have to decide on what to do with that. I’m really proud of this one and don’t want it to languish. I also really like the producers who are attached and don’t want to walk away from them, if they feel they just need a little more time to set some meetings. It’s a conundrum every writer faces at some point. Do I trust myself, or these people who have shown interest yet are unable to move it along?

Usually my answer to this is trust the other people. I tend to make bad, irrational choices for many different reasons, but am learning to control those self-destructive impulses the older I get.

My pulp novel continues to grow in popularity which I am incredibly grateful for. It will never be considered a classic of literature, nor should it. It’s a pulpy, hyper-violent and semi sexually explicit bit of fun. But, people are having fun reading it and the feedback warms the small, dark, thing that rests where my heart would be. If I had a heart, but I don’t, that thing is fucking useless.

And you do need to be heartless when it comes to writing. I’m not saying you should wake up every morning, have a hearty breakfast, a nice strong cup of coffee and then go find the nearest puppy to kick. You shouldn’t do that, that’s not cool.

The kicking the puppy part, not the hearty breakfast part, you should definitely eat breakfast.

I had the really awesome opportunity to speak at Whedoncon this past weekend and I have to say for my first time speaking at a sci-fi con, I had a great time.

One of the things I did was give a short seminar on writing and creating strong mythology within your work; which is incredibly important. I also talked about being heartless and how important that is.

By heartless, what I really mean is that you cannot grow so attached to your characters that you refuse to do things for the greater good of the story simply out of “love” for this fictional person or persons you’ve created.

I’ve received emails and DMs from readers who seem incredibly shocked about the death(s) of certain individuals within The Geek (that pulp novel I was talking about…out now!) and how these deaths broke their heart and they didn’t understand how I could kill them off.

My response is always the same. “Do you feel it worked for the story? Do you think their deaths were necessary?”

And luckily, for the most part, their answers are the same. “Yes.” They didn’t like it, they thought perhaps a narrow escape would have been better for these characters, but all admitted in the end, that the overall story would have lost quite a bit of its realism and intensity if these two characters had survived.

Now I will say that while I didn’t mind killing off one of these characters, because I wasn’t all that attached to them. This other character’s death in the book was troubling. I loved him (or her, no spoilers). I really did. I wrote a few chapters where this character survived or got the upper hand in a few different ways but it just didn’t work.

Within the mythology of The Geek, if this one specific character had survived, it would have changed everything. Gary (the main character) would not have been as affected as he was. The world would not have felt as real and/or desperate as it does.

If I had betrayed the mythology I created, because I listened to my heart, it would have been a disservice to the ultimately, poor, dead, son (or daughter) of a gun whose death, while evidently tragic was incredibly important.

Heartless. One must always be heartless. Break the rules of the world you create and you break the story.

Speaking of which, next week I’ll be starting a series of micro-stories, which I haven’t done in a while and people have been asking for. Hopefully you’ll enjoy them.

In the meantime, why not go grab a copy of The Geek. It’s available on Amazon.com in paperback and ebook. It’s also available now in paperback in both the UK and Canada on amazon as well.

Of course it’s available as an ebook from every place you can get an ebook, be it itunes, B&N and Kobol to name a few.

Here’s a link to amazon.com http://amzn.to/1MwzPG6

And Amazon.co.uk http://amzn.to/1NM5GUN

Wanna ask me a question? Wanna nerd out together with all us cool book nerds. Well then come on over to goodreads and hang out.  http://bit.ly/1XpMF4k

Would you like to hear me whine, complain and bitch? Well then the Stuff n Stuff podcast is exactly what you’re looking for. Once a week, for about thirty minutes I sit down with my bro-host and we pick a topic to discuss. We then stay on topic for about 30 seconds before the whole thing derails, it’s quite fun.  http://bit.ly/1KOLDsH

I’ve launched my incredibly mediocre Youtube channel and continue to work on programming and content for it. I hate to say it, but I really am having fun so come on by I’m doing a myriad of things, none of which make any sense.

Here’s a link to click  http://bit.ly/1Sf9MXN  and then why not subscribe and like my videos, don’t cost nothin’

Follow me on twitter, I always follow back unless you’re a porn bot or trying to sell me followers.  http://bit.ly/1YIWqZA

And there’s facebooking to be had cuz that’s still a thing.  http://bit.ly/fnbrjwp

And hey, why not instagram which I occasionally post on, when I’m not looking at pictures of food or cosplay hotties (don’t judge me! Don’t you dare judge me!) http://bit.ly/1XgDJfc

I really appreciate you stopping by. I hope you have a great rest of the week, an awesome weekend and a “not suck as crap” Monday.

I’ll see you all here next week. For now I’m off to kick a puppy. Shit! I mean breakfast, I’m off to have a hearty breakfast…um….yeah.

Best,

Jonathan

Well if it were easy everybody would be doing it

Hey Everybody,

Thanks for stopping by the old mothership.

I was supposed to have my audio book version of my novel published this week but unfortunately there has been about a two to three week delay.

It was a steep learning curve as I’m doing it myself but the main problem has been all of the construction and work going on around my neighborhood and specifically in front of my building.  I’ve sound proofed as much as I can but when there’s a guy with a jack hammer 30 feet outside your door there’s only so much you can do.

20150926_151118

However, I am changing up my schedule starting next week and will be getting up around 4 in the morning so I can record before the busy bees start buzzin’.  This should give me about 4 to 5 hours in the morning and then hopefully another couple of hours late in the afternoons when things settle down for a bit.

Then it’s a good long cry and off to bed to do it all over again.  I should be able to have it all done and out soonest.

I have a lot on my plate but am putting all of my efforts into making this as professional as possible.

Now for some fun stuff.

The Stuff & Stuff Podcast is back to a weekly show and this week we’re kicking things off with a special guest.  It’s my first Skype in interview, so I apologize for the mix and the stuttering but Skype can be tricky.  However, the guest is just awesome.  I spend a half hour talking with the incredibly talented and oh so friendly writer Squid McFinnigan.

We talk a bit about his great novel Honeysuckle Lane, then move on to his short story collection and what he’s working on for his next novel.  The half hour just flew by and I had an absolute blast.  He’s an incredibly talented writer and great guy so you should do yourself a favor and pick up his book on amazon.

Here’s the link to podbean http://bit.ly/1KOLDsH and it’s also available on ITunes.

And hey here’s a link to Squid’s goodreads page, drop by, say hi, he’s Irish and very friendly http://bit.ly/204aUks

I’ve been very fortunate enough to receive largely good reviews of my little pulp novel The Geek.  David Royce of Horror Cabin gave it a good review and that made my day, let it make yours http://bit.ly/22s8hw0

And hey here’s a fun interview I did with Kelly Smith of Kelly Smith Book reviews http://bit.ly/1VcO5vV

Well I’m off to  try and record a little it’s quite quiet at the moment.

Well It’s finally here!

Happy Monday everybody.

I hope you all got to see the new Star Wars movie this weekend.  I actually didn’t get a chance to see it but will be seeing it Wednesday, so I’m a little disappointed that I missed the hullabaloo of opening weekend but it may be best.

I’m a huge fan but I heard tons of people got dressed up to go see the film.  While that’s totally awesome, I think trying to watch Star Wars while sitting behind nine guys dressed like Darth Vader would probably annoy the crap out of me.

This will be the only post this week as I have tons of family and friends doing annoying things like being kind and throwing parties so I’m just gonna indulge in that and I think everyone should do the same.

But I’ll be back Monday and then it’s new years so not sure what’s going on there but starting January 4th I’m back to the usual two updates a week.

In the meantime over on Reluctant Joy I’ve been posting micro-stories the last few weeks.  I’ve posted them all in order, I think you’ll see what I was doing or at least attempting to do if you read them at one time and I really hope you like it http://bit.ly/rljywp

Over on Stuff N Stuff Palmer and I are talking about really important things like how to tell if a donkey is dead or alive, when to leave a wedding and where to find good Chinese food.  http://bit.ly/1KOLDsH

I don’t know if there’s enough time to get a copy of my novel The Geek to you by Christmas but downloads are instantaneous if you don’t need a paperback http://bit.ly/1MAAyZQ

And as I rush off to do Holiday things I leave you with this thought.  It doesn’t really matter if your Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jedi, Sith or Huffle Puff.  It doesn’t matter what you believe or what you celebrate.  Just try to remember we’re all in this together and give the person you pass on the street a smile and wish them Happy Holidays.

Then in January we can all go back to being right pricks to each other.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Jonathan

Happy Holidays!

I know some people get mad at that, the all encompassing Happy Holidays thing but well how do I know what religion you are, so this just seems better.

I do usually wish people a merry Christmas when I see them but mainly because it’s force of habit and just seems cheery.  I am not religious and do not adhere to a mainstream religion but I do love this time of year.

Out here in Los Angeles lights have been going up and continue to go up around the city.  It’s a holly jolly time of year and always makes me happy.  The constant flow of ham and cookies doesn’t hurt either.

I hope things are looking cheery in your neck of the woods wherever that may be and that you’re in a happy holiday mood.

Okay I probably got a little carried away there but can’t help it, it’s a fun time of year.

Have you gotten all your shopping done?  Is there a sociopath in your life who likes to read in between planning monumental crime sprees?  Well have I got the book for you.  It’s my novel The Geek and it’s filled with sex, violence, revenge, prostitutes, a transvestite anarchist and an entire house filled with unicorns and pornography.  Now if that doesn’t say “Merry Christmas ya Psycho!” I don’t know what does.

Why don’t you head on over to amazon and pick up a copy for the bat shit crazy person in your life http://amzn.to/1MwzPG6

Are you a book nerd like me?  Do you like hanging with other book nerds?  Well head on over to goodreads and we’ll hang out together http://bit.ly/1XpMF4k

Over on the podcast my buddy Mike and I are talking about lots of stuff from infrastructure to SJWs, gun rights and more, lot’s of light hearted conversation to get you through the holidays http://bit.ly/1KOLDsH

Over on Reluctant Joy there’s a new micro-story up called SUN and continues the theme http://bit.ly/rljywp

Wanna follow me on twitter?  Course ya do http://bit.ly/1YIWqZA

Facebook?  I can hook you up http://bit.ly/fnbrjwp

And hey, I really want to thank you for stopping by and hope you’re having a great holiday season whatever you celebrate.

I’ll be back Wednesday with new stuff!

Best,

Jonathan
