Well I don’t know about you but…

…I’m freaking exhausted.

I’ve written and re-written this entry about five times now.  The whole post was going to be discussing the current state of the right and the left, the hypocrisy on both sides by the accused and those who support them as well as delving deep into this whole insane sexual predator/assaulter tornado of shit we find ourselves in.

However, things are moving so freaking fast and crazy it’s frankly nearly impossible to keep up.

And then you check facebook…that’s a terrible idea.  Because everyone is mad about everything ever in the world, about things they should be angry about, things they shouldn’t be angry about and quite frankly just looking for new things to be angry about.

I am slowly putting a long series together and will wait until this whole thing calms down a bit to post it.  I’m doing this for a number of reasons, A) because there’s so much going on I want to wait for the fallout to see where we all stand.  For example, the whole Roy Moore shit show and to see how many more women come out from the shadows to talk about Al Franken.

B) Maybe this can be a place for people to come and just chill as we get into the holidays.  There are so many voices shouting to the sky and into the abyss of the internet that it’s just way too much sometimes and I think we could all use a little break.

So until after the new year, this will be a place where there are no politics, social commentary or anything like that. Though podcast and YouTube will not be included in that ban.

In other words…

…Fuck it, here’s a story about a Tree.

Conversations with nature: The Pink Tree

As I strolled down the lane, sunlight dappling through the clouds I was struck by the beauty of the tree.  I stopped short, breathed deep and just stared in awe at nature’s exquisite palette.

The tree stood silent, noble and proud.  I closed my eyes, reaching out with my mind for contact, my thoughts forming words.

To my surprise, the tree responded.

Hey Pink Tree. Watcha thinkin’ about? I asked.

20171102_095826

Nothin’ just Pink Tree stuff. It whispered in my mind.

Cool bruh.

What’d you just say to me?!

Um…cool…bruh?

I ain’t your bruh!

Whoa Pink Tree chill!

Don’t tell me to chill you little shit!

Damn Pink Tree what’s your problem?

I don’t have to explain myself to you! Fuck off human!

Whatever Pink Tree…just…whatever.

And thus ends our first installment in the conversations with nature series. More next week.

As for the podcast, nothing new up this week though Angie and I will be recording a number of them this weekend. However you can still listen to the Illuminati podcast and of course watch the video on YouTube.

Though there is a new video up on youtube today about the RFK assassination and MK Ultra. We recorded it this past summer and it has been available on podbean and iTunes for months but never got around to posting it on youtube until now.

Okay, back next week.

Hang in there everybody.

Okay let’s take a breath…

Hey All,

So I think we can all agree it’s been a hell of a week.  I’m not going to get into what the President said or who’s right or who’s wrong here.

However, I do think a general metric in how you live your day to day life can be summed up as followed:

If the former head of the KKK thanks you for something you’ve said, you’ve said something horrible.  Unless you happen to be the current head of the KKK, in which case…well done ya ignorant, racist bastard.

Angie and I are actually going to be preempting our usual podcast this next Friday and will be airing an “emergency episode” of The Perilous Podcast this Wednesday in which we cover the current shit tsunami and dig deep into the conspiracy behind the alt-right, the far left and what really happened in Charlottesville and why you should actually be way more scared than you already are.

However, in the meantime how’s about a nice way to start your weekend.

Over on The Perilous Podcast site I sit down with Bryant Dillon, co-founder of Fanbase press and fellow writer.  We talk about how comic book super heroes are becoming the new pantheon of Gods and it’s far more light hearted and fun than what’s going on now.

On The Perilous Podcast YouTube channel we have the video broadcast of our Black Dahlia podcast from last week, plus other past episodes in video form.  So you may want to give that a watch.

As for me I’m getting ready to do a bit of traveling.  I’ll be in Denver (I think) in late September for a couple days, followed by a trip to Phoenix in late October and then a jaunt down to Palm Springs in early November, so yay me and my hotel points program.

I’m pretty excited about my novella coming out in January and my new novel set for release in spring of 2018 as well as some other stuff in the works I just can’t talk about right now…but it’s all good.

Look everyone, let’s try to stay calm, maybe even distract ourselves a bit (ain’t nothin’ wrong with that) and enjoy our weekend.

I have a lovely weekend planned as I recoup from my latest Jiu Jitsu injury, including a Tchaikovsky concert this evening, a bit of work tomorrow recording some podcasts followed by a night in and then I’m hoping some video games Sunday followed by a movie before going back to training on Monday.

Plus I scored some great plums at Costco this week so that’s good.

Anyhoo, why not follow the links below for all of your distraction needs.  Pick up a copy of my pulp novel The Geek. or maybe just unplug from everything and go for a nice long hike.

But seriously, buy my book first, I don’t see why you wouldn’t.  Links for that are below.  However if you’re in the Los Angeles area or live in Los Angeles and like supporting independent bookstores why not head into Los Feliz and go to Skylight Books to pick up The Geek in paperback.

Skylight is awesome.  They support and promote local and indie authors and it’s a great place to pick up a book and browse.  I love their counterculture stuff and they have a great selection of quirky fiction.

Plus it’s right down the street from Fred 62.  A great diner with awesome milkshakes, so you can stop by there before or after your trip.

No I am not the owner of Fred 62…but I eat there frequently.

Here’s a link to skylight with their address and hours:

Just another quick update

Hey all,

So I know I said I’d be posting more micro-stories but I’ve just been swamped.  I’m hoping to do some this afternoon and post over the next few weeks or so.

In the meantime there’s a brand new episode of The Perilous Podcast.  This week we are discussing Bob Lazar and why I think he isn’t lying about his time at Area 51.

You can also catch up on old podcasts over at the podbean page (link below) or if you’d rather watch them in video form head on over to the new Perilous Podcast YouTube channel…also below with the links and junks.

For some added, free entertainment, my cohost Angie and I shot some promos for the podcast…we weren’t very good so here’s some bloopers for y’all.

I’ve got some fun stuff happening over the weekend like going to an actual party and also I’m heading downtown to the Eddie Bravo Invitational.  I’ve never been to anything like this before so I’m pretty excited.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and I’ll see you all Monday.

Best,

Jonathan

I was fooled and you were fooled. You know that makes us all fools right?

Hey all thanks for stopping by the mother ship.

So if any of you have been paying attention at all this week you know that there have been two big stories…three if you count a smaller but almost more important one.

The two big stories this week have been the continued cabinet appointments of President Elect Trump and of course that every intelligence agency has come forward to express their sincere conviction that the Russian’s definitely hacked our election.

While the FBI and other agencies have stated that they do not feel comfortable ascribing motive as to why these hacks occurred, the CIA does feel comfortable.

However, while most agencies aren’t comfortable talking about motive, they all agree 100 percent that the Russians definitely hacked not only the DNC but the RNC as well.

The RNC has denied they were hacked, but I personally don’t believe it.

Now, we know the DNC was hacked because that information was in fact released.  Yet the RNC info was not leaked.

There’s a reason for that of course.  If Russia wanted to influence the election and help their man, in this case Donald Trump get elected, why would they release sensitive and possibly detrimental information about the Republicans to the public?

They wouldn’t.

Using wiki-leaks, Vladimir Putin pulled off a master stroke of 21st century espionage.

He had his dupes in place and really just did an incredible job…well his intelligence apparatus did.  But of course that apparatus is minutely overseen by Putin himself.

His two major dupes were Julian Assange and of course President Elect Donald J. Trump.

He used Julian’s hatred of not only government, but specifically of Hillary Clinton, knowing that wiki-leaks and Julian Assange would jump at the chance to go to war with a woman he despised.

A woman who wants to prosecute Julian Assange for acts of espionage against the United States.  A woman, who if you’re not too naïve, helped orchestrate the rape case against Julian Assange that has kept him locked up in the Ecuadorian Embassy for years.

Honestly I’d probably be pretty pissed off too, but Julian is a really smart guy, he should have realized he was being used.  So he either did and didn’t care, he was either more than a dupe or he simply got played by a man who used to run one of the most notorious spy agencies on the planet.

Personally I think Julian was well aware of what was going on but I don’t have proof of course, so am putting him in the dupe category.

This then brings us to the true dupe, and there is no doubt in my mind that this is what President Elect Trump is.

Some will argue that Trump knowingly worked with Russia, that he in fact is somehow a Russian operative or agent provocateur.

This is not the case.  Spy masters like Putin love dupes.  If given the choice a dupe is far easier to handle than say an actual operative or perhaps a recruited citizen.

Dupes bring one incredible quality to a covert operation in that they have no idea they are actually involved.

Dupes are wonderful, easily manipulated, not too bright targets, and President Elect Trump fits that description to a T.

Putin knew that Trumps ego was his in and played to that perfectly.  There were also people in Trumps team who had serious ties to Russia and Putin specifically.  Chief among them being former campaign head Paul Manafort.

Putin did not and still does not need Donald Trump to know he’s being used.  He simply has to do what he’s done for decades and that is to manipulate the pieces on the board to attain check mate.

Trump thinks he’s the King, but he’s simply a pawn and not a very smart one at that.  He continues to be manipulated from within and has appointed – as Secretary of State – a man with such strong ties to Russia that he received the Order of Friendship award from Russia a few years ago.

Rex Tillerson, a man with no diplomatic experience and a long record of shady dealings as head of Exxon Mobile is now our chief diplomat.

Well I say that now.  He has truly only been nominated and must go through a hearing after inauguration, but the chance of him being denied the position is incredibly slim.

The Order of Friendship is given for many reasons.  One amongst them being major contributions in terms of economic and business joint ventures that help Russia.

Considering Russia is a petro-economy it makes sense that the head of Exxon would receive this award.  And while I don’t think the award is that special in and of itself (Steven Seagal got one too) it is telling that the main diplomat who Trump has selected is tied not only into Russia, but Russia’s petro-economic machinery.

There is no doubt in my mind that Trump is being manipulated and if I had to put my finger on the person who in the end is most likely Vladimir Putin’s true proxy it’s probably Steve Bannon.

Bannon, Breitbart and the alt-right movement in general have been singing Putin’s praises for a while.  They see him as the leader in a traditionalist movement that will bring a very, socially conservative world to the forefront.

The fact that Putin is far more about money, power and control and (in my opinion) is only using the alt-right to gain victory seems to be missed by Bannon and his ilk.  Or Bannon just doesn’t really care as long as he (Bannon) achieves his goal too.

But while I think Bannon is being used by Putin, Putin is also being used by Bannon.  Both thinking they are the more clever of the two.  However, I’d put my money on Putin.

Here is a great article with tons of solid and actual news links that goes into great detail about Bannon and Breitbart’s relationship with Putin:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/11/18/1601406/-Everything-You-Need-to-Know-About-Steve-Bannon-Breitbart-Russia

I am always dubious about websites with either a left or right agenda, but in this case the Dailykos’s article is so well researched that I’m giving it a personal thumbs up.

It’s also a little terrifying.

All the Trump supporters in America can claim that this is some left wing conspiracy about Russia but let’s be honest here, intelligence agencies tend to be right leaning and conservative, they also for the most part try to and are neutral and really are simply trying to protect America.

I may disagree with a lot of their tactics but I do not question their motives.

Plus the only instance of an intelligence agency mucking up this election was the FBI’s James Comey and that was not something that helped the left.

And for all you Trump supporters, if the CIA came out and said Russia hacked the election to get Hillary Clinton elected President you’d be freaking the fuck out.

I for one am not shocked and I’d be just as upset if it was Hillary who’d been used for Russia’s ends too.

I believe as screwed up as the process is, American elections should not be the play toy of a corrupt Russian Oligarch like Putin.

This is going on pretty long so let me try and wrap things up by saying that in the end, this was never going to bother the Trump supporters.  But keep in mind that those who voted for Trump voted on the promise of change, voted on the promise of draining the swamp, voted on the promise of ending corruption.

Well kids, you got just the opposite.  Trump has appointed only insiders who have ties to everyone and everything you hate; wall street, big oil, open borders for business, tax cuts for the rich, and even George Soros.

That’s right, George Soros, the alt-right’s favorite demon is represented in the Trump cabinet.

Trump is a dupe.  He’s been used and like any true dupe he has no clue.

While he’s currently on his “Victory Tour” and tossing out hats like he’s at a NASCAR race the real operatives are whispering in his ear.  They’re telling him he doesn’t need an intelligence briefing every day.  They’re telling him to delegate the big decisions to Bannon.  They’re telling him that the people love him and will always love him and that Russia just wants to be an ally and a friend.

I should point out that I do consider Hillary Clinton to be a serious Hawk.  I also believe that if she had been elected we’d be at war with Russia within two years tops.  This would be a disaster for the world and a true, country wrecking disaster for Russia.

I do not want war with Russia and I believe Russia and specifically Putin does not want war with the United States.

But Putin does not want to live side by side singing Kumbaya M’lord.

Russia does not want to be America’s equal, they want to be America’s conqueror.  And if Putin can do that without firing a shot?

Check Mate.

Everyone who voted for Trump was fooled.

Everyone who thought Trump could never win was fooled.

Anyone who still thinks Trump is a brilliant business man with no compromised world view, well, you know what you are.

In Trumps own words from his interview regarding missing intelligence briefings….”I’m, like, really smart…”

Fuck me.

This week on the podcast the bro-host and I are again talking the far left and why they need to stop being self-entitled weenies.  We explore gender versus sex and why, no matter what they are still the same thing.  We play a game called no-noun or pro-noun in which you can hear my head explode: http://bit.ly/1KOLDsH

And as we get near Christmas why not pick up a copy of my pulpy, violent, sex and murder filled novel The Geek.  Available at Amazon.com in paperback or ebook and every other site in ebook including iTunes, google books and more.  http://amzn.to/1MwzPG6

If you live in the Los Angeles area and like supporting local writers and super cool independent book stores head on over to Skylight Books in Los Feliz and grab a paperback copy of The Geek there.

Hidely Hodely Space Cowboys and Cowgirls.  Thanks for cycling through the air lock and paying the old mothership a visit.

The bro-host and I are currently recording podcasts for the new show The Perilous Podcast which will begin airing in late December/early January so I appreciate the patience.

However, we have both stumbled upon a ridiculous app called Candid which has turned us both into amazing, trolling, shitlords.  We were so amused we felt the need to record a spontaneous episode of Stuff n Stuff.

This was actually recorded a few weeks ago but I’ve been so busy I spaced and forgot to upload it until today.

We say and do a lot of terrible things we don’t mean so do try to lighten up and enjoy, and make sure to check your triggering at the door.  We set out in this podcast to be as extreme as possible to simply show how ridiculously fun and offensive this app can be for letting off steam and saying things you don’t mean.

Here’s a link to the podbean site and it should be on iTunes within a day or so. http://bit.ly/1KOLDsH

I’ll probably be running a series of micro stories over the next few weeks since I get a lot of dm’s on twitter from readers who really enjoy them.

If you like a great book, but don’t know what you’re in the mood for the staff is really knowledgeable.  They have turned me onto some really great reads over the years.

If you don’t like great books, just go in and purchase my book The Geek.

Okay more to come next week.

I hope everybody has a great rest of the week and a fun weekend.

The Order of The Phoenix FanFest

Howdy All and thanks for swinging by the mothership.

As things mellow out around here and I get more into a rhythm again the updates will become more regular, which is good…I assume.

This week however I’m running around like a crazy person getting ready for Phoenix Fan Fest in Phoenix, Arizona.

I’ll be there promoting the upcoming release of the long delayed audio version of my pulp novel The Geek as well as new releases for 2017.

I’m also looking forward to catching up and hanging out with the Two Gay Geeks themselves Ben and Keith who are two of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet and have just scary, encyclopedic knowledge of all things sci-fi, fantasy, comics and general geeky goodness.

Plus I have been told there is either a damn good Chinese or Mexican meal in my future when we hang and there are few things on this planet better than sharing a good meal with good friends.

As I continue to adjust to this new world of media platforms I’m making some big moves toward becoming my own self contained colony of product.  This includes starting my own media company for all future projects in 2017 and beyond, but more on that as we approach the new year.

I’m not innovating anything really but following in the steps and attempting to copy those whom I admire like Felicia Day, Chris Hardwick and Philip DeFranco.

Basically in order to survive (and hopefully thrive) in the new entertainment industry landscape we must all become our own media empire.

While I am nowhere near empiric I am hoping to establish the aforementioned tiny little colony of my own making that will encompass both ebook, print and audio novels, my podcast, the new youtube channel and other creative ventures that will keep me mildly relevant as the yeas go on.  Or until I can finally afford that spaceship I’ve had my eye on since I was 8 and go off to explore the galaxy.

If you see me in Phoenix come up and say hi, feel free to buy me a taco because tacos are the international symbol of love and understanding.

Or I may just buy you a taco as an attempted bribe to get you to read my novel.

Oh and that whole love and understanding crapola I mentioned too.

In the meantime why not go check out all my social media or catch up on some old podcasts.  They’re pretty half-assed and craptacular but hey I know what my audience likes.

If you’re in the Los Angeles area or coming to visit why not head down to Skylight Books in Los Feliz.  Skylight is a great independent bookstore and I’ve gotten some wonderful counter culture books there over the years.  They also happen to be very supportive of indie writers which is why they carry The Geek.

Skylight is located at 1818 North Vermont Ave in Los Angeles (90027)

What’s really cool is that if you purchase my novel and tell them that I sent you, they’ll stare at you blankly, because honestly they have no idea who I am, so that could be fun.

So head on over and pick up a paperback copy of my novel and then walk up the street to Fred 62 which is a super tasty diner with amazing milk shakes.  Fred 62 does not carry my book, but I’m letting that slide because the food is so good.

The Joys of Home Ownership…at some point…I assume.

So I’ve been in the new place for about a month.  I really do love it, and having the recording studio in the house is a total game changer, but I’m still living in boxes and still haven’t really unpacked due to all of the renovations going on around the house.

We’re going to be about a week and a half over schedule but we are under budget at the moment and should end up right at the max of the budget. That includes the unforeseen disaster that was replacing both the roof on the house and the recording studio.

The crew working on my house are an amazing group of talented, honest, fun, friendly hard working guys.

But seriously, they need to get the fuck out.

I’m still working on the audio version of The Geek and it will definitely be out and available for download or ignoring by the end of October.  Just in time for the holiday buying season.  That’s right, Christmas, Chanukah and Festivus will be here sooner than you think and nothing says let’s celebrate some quasi-religious stuff like a pulp novel filled with terrible people doing terrible things, over the top violence, sex, a handful of dead hookers and a house filled with unicorns and pornography.

Yup, just like Life of Pi but less tiger sex.

If you’re in the Los Angeles area and want to pick up a paperback while supporting local indie bookstores and local writers, The Geek is available at Skylight Books at 1818 North Vermont Avenue in Los Feliz.  Lots of cool places to eat and shops to shop in down there so make a day of it.

If you’re not in Los Angeles or just don’t want to go anywhere it’s of course available on Amazon.com as a paperback or ebook and ebook all around the world on basically every conceivable site where you can buy an ebook.

And what’s this?   http://bit.ly/1XpMF4k    Oh that?  That’s nothin’.  Just a link to my goodreads page where you can check out reviews and ratings before spending your cash on something you think may suck.

You may think it sucks after you buy it too…can’t help ya there but I do hope you enjoy it.

Here’s a link to amazon with more reviews and while you’re there maybe you might wanna drop 99 cents on my tiny little collection of short stories.  I will also be doing an audio book of that sometime in November.  http://amzn.to/1MwzPG6

The last episode of Stuff N Stuff aired this past Wednesday and everybody who listens was sad to see it go (literally tens of people) however we’ll be launching a new podcast soon called The Chapel Perilous so you know, there’s that.  In the meantime if you like listening to two morons who have no idea what the hell they’re talking about all episodes are up and available to listen to or download on iTunes or here http://bit.ly/1KOLDsH

Wanna follow me on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter?  Yeah me neither, but the links are up top if you’re morbidly curious.

Finally I did want to address the passing of Gene Wilder this week.  I’m a child of the seventies and Gene Wilder was a big part of that.  It really didn’t matter what movie he was in, he always made it better (like bacon).

A lot of millennial types might only know him as Willy Wonka or worse, just as that weird guy in that meme picture.  I hope people will go back and watch some of his movies so they can truly enjoy the man whose on camera personae and sincerity in every role was a joy to watch.

I’ve been digging through boxes and watching some of my favorite Gene Wilder movies the past week and I recommend the following highly…they’re listed in the order I watched them but you watch how you want:

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Stir Crazy

The Producers

Silver Streak

Blazing Saddles

Young Frankenstein (Pronounced Frahnkunshteen)

Well there you have it, I highly recommend those  and even more obscure ones like The World’s Greatest Lover.

He’s more than a meme and his movies will live on, but so will that meme and in this day and age that’s a little slice of appropriate immortality we can call a victory.

Have a great labor day to my US readers and a lovely regular weekend to everybody else.

The unbearable likeness of being Micro

Hey All,

As usual thanks for stopping by.  After literally tens of requests for some more micro stories that’s exactly what I’m gonna do.  So for around the next seven weeks I’ll be posting micro stories.

My goal with these stories is of course to attempt to tell a complete story in a paragraph or two.  However, they will also collectively tell one whole story…hopefully.

Once I’ve posted them as individual stories I’ll do one final post of all of them together so that the full story is laid out.

The two big, key words to keep in mind here are attempt and hopefully.

All the links to my other useless crapola will be after the story.  Hope you guys like it.

Best,

Jonathan

SOLACE

The wooden gate creaked only slightly when he opened it.

The smell of the blossoms was both intoxicating and relaxing.

For the first time in a long time he felt safe.

With every step toward the door, the shadows of his past fell further behind him.

The singular lamppost, glowing a soft yellow in the moonlight welcomed him home.

Movin’ Groovin’ and Youtubin’

Well things happen and don’t happen in this town. Such is the way of the working writer.

Life, if we stop to relax and think about it, is a pretty good thing. Sure there are ups and there are downs but overall this little blue marble aint a bad place to hang out, all things considered.

My recently optioned screenplay seems to be going nowhere relatively quickly. The second option is coming up and I’ll have to decide on what to do with that. I’m really proud of this one and don’t want it to languish. I also really like the producers who are attached and don’t want to walk away from them, if they feel they just need a little more time to set some meetings. It’s a conundrum every writer faces at some point. Do I trust myself, or these people who have shown interest yet are unable to move it along?

Usually my answer to this is trust the other people. I tend to make bad, irrational choices for many different reasons, but am learning to control those self-destructive impulses the older I get.

My pulp novel continues to grow in popularity which I am incredibly grateful for. It will never be considered a classic of literature, nor should it. It’s a pulpy, hyper-violent and semi sexually explicit bit of fun. But, people are having fun reading it and the feedback warms the small, dark, thing that rests where my heart would be. If I had a heart, but I don’t, that thing is fucking useless.

And you do need to be heartless when it comes to writing. I’m not saying you should wake up every morning, have a hearty breakfast, a nice strong cup of coffee and then go find the nearest puppy to kick. You shouldn’t do that, that’s not cool.

The kicking the puppy part, not the hearty breakfast part, you should definitely eat breakfast.

I had the really awesome opportunity to speak at Whedoncon this past weekend and I have to say for my first time speaking at a sci-fi con, I had a great time.

One of the things I did was give a short seminar on writing and creating strong mythology within your work; which is incredibly important. I also talked about being heartless and how important that is.

By heartless, what I really mean is that you cannot grow so attached to your characters that you refuse to do things for the greater good of the story simply out of “love” for this fictional person or persons you’ve created.

I’ve received emails and DMs from readers who seem incredibly shocked about the death(s) of certain individuals within The Geek (that pulp novel I was talking about…out now!) and how these deaths broke their heart and they didn’t understand how I could kill them off.

My response is always the same. “Do you feel it worked for the story? Do you think their deaths were necessary?”

And luckily, for the most part, their answers are the same. “Yes.” They didn’t like it, they thought perhaps a narrow escape would have been better for these characters, but all admitted in the end, that the overall story would have lost quite a bit of its realism and intensity if these two characters had survived.

Now I will say that while I didn’t mind killing off one of these characters, because I wasn’t all that attached to them. This other character’s death in the book was troubling. I loved him (or her, no spoilers). I really did. I wrote a few chapters where this character survived or got the upper hand in a few different ways but it just didn’t work.

Within the mythology of The Geek, if this one specific character had survived, it would have changed everything. Gary (the main character) would not have been as affected as he was. The world would not have felt as real and/or desperate as it does.

If I had betrayed the mythology I created, because I listened to my heart, it would have been a disservice to the ultimately, poor, dead, son (or daughter) of a gun whose death, while evidently tragic was incredibly important.

Heartless. One must always be heartless. Break the rules of the world you create and you break the story.

Speaking of which, next week I’ll be starting a series of micro-stories, which I haven’t done in a while and people have been asking for. Hopefully you’ll enjoy them.

In the meantime, why not go grab a copy of The Geek. It’s available on Amazon.com in paperback and ebook. It’s also available now in paperback in both the UK and Canada on amazon as well.

Of course it’s available as an ebook from every place you can get an ebook, be it itunes, B&N and Kobol to name a few.

A quick rant and then on to the usual whoring.

Hey Everybody,

We know it’s always inevitable.  Or more accurately almost always inevitable.  Given enough fame, attention, money and power almost everyone turns into kind of a dick.

I’ve made no secret of my love for Amy Shumer’s brand of comedy.  I’ve been a fan of her standup for a long while and an even greater admirer of her Comedy Central show.  Which I personally think is one of the best sketch comedy shows in a very long time.

But recently (at least in my view) she’s been going a bit Chappelle.  Perhaps taking herself a little too seriously.  I can certainly understand how all the pressure can get to a person.  Hell we all deal with pressure every day and sometimes it feels like it’s going to squash us flat.  But when you add fame, power and money (lots of money) pressure can turn into dickishness.

I still think she’s funny, but this most recent incident with the supposedly rude fan taking a selfie with her (and the stories of how it went down are in dispute) to me seems to be a turning point for one simple reason, and that was her statement regarding the incident.

I’m not going to go into detail here because a quick google search will bring up more than enough links for you to make your own decision, but I will say that when I hear a celebrity of Amy Shumer’s caliber and level say “I don’t owe my fans anything” it really does rub me the wrong way.

There are lots of incredibly talented people who wallow in obscurity.  Some never find any recognition, some find niche recognition and others gain levels of fame and success to varying degrees.

No matter how successful or famous an artist is, it is their fan base that makes them, it propels them.  In short a performer in fact owes their fans and owes them big.

Does this mean she needs to bend over backwards and take every selfie with a fan every time they want one?  Of course not.  But it isn’t just talent (which she has plenty of) that makes someone successful, it’s their fans, it’s the people who watch your show, read your books, listen to your music, buy tickets to your concerts.  Without them you’d be the most brilliant performer at the local coffee house, while hoping you can still cover your rent with your job at the box store, restaurant, or Uber time.

It’s hard to say if what we’re witnessing is in fact the true nature of Amy Shumer that’s been hiding underneath this whole time or if this is a person who perhaps is a little too full of themselves and feeling more important in the scheme of the world than is warranted.

So, does Amy Shumer owe her fans absolutely everything?  No, I don’t think so not everything.  But does she in fact owe her fans nothing?  Hell no, she owes and she owes big.

I hope the statement was partially made out of frustration and perhaps being pulled in a billion directions at once but if this is a sincere belief she holds, I think it could spell trouble for not only her fans but for herself as well.

You are only ever as successful as your fan base.  Many centuries ago Dave Chappelle had what many would agree to be one of the best sketch comedy shows of all time.  Not only was it funny, it was poignant, brilliant and boundary breaking.

Yes it was in great part due to Dave’s talents as well as his writers.  But the main reason it was so big was because the fans kept coming back week after week.

Then Dave went nuts.  He began to succumb to the pressure and blaming everyone around him while never taking responsibility himself for any of the things that happened.  He began to see racism everywhere, he saw enemies everywhere and even to this day conspiracy theories abound as to what really happened.

Dave of course still does comedy and seems as brilliant as ever, however his fan base has mostly moved on and regaining them to the level he once was is most likely impossible.

He may not have owed his fans everything, but he owed them a great deal.  When he walked away the fans moved on, the bulk of which will never come back.

I doubt the same thing will happen to Amy Schumer I doubt she’ll snap like Dave, and I for one certainly wouldn’t want to be under the pressures she’s under.  However, if you piss off the fans, if you discount their innate power and cache you will end up the most powerful and popular entertainer people used to care about.

So does Amy owe her fans everything?  No.

Does she owe them nothing? Hell No.

Does she owe them something more than comedy?  Yes, she owes them the respect they deserve.  Without the fans a comedian is just a person talking to his or herself.

I’m still gonna watch her show though, that shit is funny.

Well enough of that let’s get to the whoring.

Speaking of owing fans…this happenedScreenshot (4) Yeah not only am I on the same list as Chuck Palahniuk on good reads for best transgressive fiction I’m tied with him for the number five slot.  Okay sure he also takes up slots 1, 2 and 4 but hey my little pulp novel The Geek is tied with his amazing Burnt Tongues.  That’s crazy.

You know that thing I was talking about earlier with the whole fan base thing?  Yeah, I owe, I owe big time.  So thank you to everyone who buys my novel and enjoys it and then votes for it on one of the listopia lists it’s on and/or leaves a review or rating.  Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And hey if you want to see the other lists it’s on or checkout the reviews and ratings head on over to my goodreads page. http://bit.ly/1XpMF4k

You can also check them out on amazon.com where you can also pick up my ebook collection of short stories http://amzn.to/1MwzPG6

Due to popular demand The Geek is also now available in paperback in both the UK and  Canada through amazon, so again thanks fan base for the interest http://amzn.to/1NM5GUN

Over on podbean and iTunes there’s a new podcast up and available for streaming.  This week the bro-host and I discuss our adventure to the heart of hipster territory and our encounter with the great mystery known as The Sphinx of Los Feliz http://bit.ly/1KOLDsH

My youtube channel is up and running and I’m beginning to post more every week.  New video up today, then a new one Friday and of course every Sunday is Soda Pop Sunday where I taste test a different soda…oh and I’m posting a new sketch on Monday so check it out.  http://bit.ly/1Sf9MXN

And hey why not follow me on twitter because…I have no good reason http://bit.ly/1YIWqZA

And the facebooking http://bit.ly/fnbrjwp

Well I’m off to try and do things that make me seem important and productive…maybe even relevant.  Yeah I’m pretty sure it’s a losing battle.

Thanks for stopping by.  I hope everyone has a great rest of the week and a fun weekend.

Best,

Jonathan
